Film Audiences

Levi Strauss- binary opposition- a film needs to have opposing sides.

Encanto- mainstream with a niche. Primary audience- children, Secondary- adults.

BBFC needs a qualification to be granted cinema or DVD release.

Get Out (15)- Is considered a 15 because its not that graphic, no nudity or exposure is there- only some bad language and blood which is seen all the time in that genre. The theme isn't that heavy and messed up unlike some movies which can be psychologically damaging to the viewer.

Frozen (PG)- Is a PG instead of a U since PEGI believes that there is some mild violence within the film.

NETFLIX to set its own official UK ratings under BBFC system.

Until now, ratings such as PG, 12 and 18 have been set by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

Netflix will become the first company to determine ratings that will be given the BBFC seal of approval.

Netflix will manually tag things like violence and swearing and the algorithm will pick the appropriate age rating.

The system will be tested in a year-long pilot, but the BBFC said it was confident it would give accurate results.

It said it wants 100% of films and programmes on Netflix to have BBFC ratings and for the system to be extended to other streaming services.

The announcement comes after BBFC research found almost 80% of parents were concerned about children seeing inappropriate content online.

The BBFC has also published a set of guidelines for streaming and gaming platforms to achieve "greater and more consistent use of trusted age ratings online".

Today, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has renewed its existing rating agreement with Netflix. The partnership allows Netflix to generate age ratings and content advice in line with BBFC Classification Guidelines. The agreement, which initially commenced in February 2019, has been extended for an additional four years. This means that the BBFC’s iconic age rating symbols, which families know and trust, will remain in place across 100% of content on Netflix in the UK until at least late 2028. The BBFC regularly audits content rated by Netflix to ensure accuracy and consistency.

This research also found that 99% of people recognise at least one BBFC age rating symbol, with 78% recognising them all. Additionally, 90% of parents and caregivers, 91% of teachers, and 88% of teens aged 16-19 say that they trust BBFC age ratings all or most of the time.
